ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR

We weren't in it
for the sex.
Ours was a true love,
but that didn't end
the War or raise the battle-scared
dead
or give names to the millions
buried in mass graves
or left to rot in the sun.
Babies still
decomposed
in the arms of their mothers
and left organic
Rorschach patterns
to stain the ground
with the broth
of their
decay.

Wait. . .

(Caroline -
I think her name was
Caroline.)
